Hi there. Working on reinstalling outdrive for first time. In my gasket pack there is a large round rubber ring. The old one was still in the bellow when I removed the drive. My question is do I insert the old one onto the outdrive or do I insert it into the bellow in old location? Seems to me it should be around outdrive to seal it but I had trouble getting it to go in the last 2 inches that way.

you remove the old one from the housing, clean the housing, apply bellows adhesive or 3m weatherstrip adhesive to the rubber ring, insert in housing ,let dry, install drive

+1 to BT....plus:
Page 2A-15 of your OEM service manual shows it nicely, but doesn't mention the adhesive, which is very necessary to ensure the ring does not shift (my first time I did not use adhesive and the ring fell out of place during drive install and was cut in two. Unfortunately, I did not find this out till the next time I took the drive off).

By the way, it is called a "bellows" (yes, with an s on the end, even just one. Like a fireplace bellows.) "Bellow" is the noise we make when we find out we have to replace one!

And the big ring seal doesn't go in the bellows, it goes in the bellhousing.

ok so what do I glue this thing to? Page 2A-15 shows a arrow pointing to rubber boot / bellows. I thought I remember it being positioned closer to the boat itself. I don't see where it would sit flush against anything. Do I glue to those three protrusions/tabs? One of these tabs I referring to is in the picture on 2A-15.

It goes all the way in the bell housing bore and seats on the bellows ring. You have to kinda picture in your mind where the end of the outdrive will engage the rubber ring. If you are trying to put the rubber ring in the bellows, your going too far!

There is a small ridge at the end of the bellhousing opening. You glue the ring up against the ridge.
