Question about reinstalling in hull transducer.

I noticed on the last outing that my depth finder was reading 0.0 and blinking. I got out there today to check it out. I pulled the transducer off the mount, it was dry inside and it was kind of dirty, so i cleaned it up and tested it in a bucket. It read, although it seemed to be a little off.

I went to put it back on the mount and noticed it was loose, and when i tugged on the mount it began to break free of the hull.

I pulled it off, scrapped off the old sealant, and cleaned it all with alcohol. I used some marine sealant/adhesive and mounted the base back on the boat, I wasnt sure what angle, so i put it back the way it looked when i started. I am letting it sit overnight to cure.

So now. do i need to fill this mount with something? if so, what is suggested?

This is the depth finder

and this is similar to the transducer. Although im not sure if its exactly the same model, it is very close if not.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Question about reinstalling in hull transducer.

thanks for that link, but it seems that isnt the same transducer i have. They say to epoxy the face of the transducer strait to the hull. This one has a round base that the transducer will twist-lock onto.

I found the PDF for it, and i do need to put something in it..

If i am not mistaken that's the same thing as marine antifreeze. I have also heard of using mineral oil

The only purpose of the glycol or mineral oil (baby oil) is so there can't be any air bubbles made when moving. It's dense enough where water wouldn't be

ive read that it is an ingredient in newer environmental safe antifreeze. I figured that would work. Ill look into the mineral oil or baby oil as well. thanks.

seriously? 230+ views and no one can tell me what i can use in place of Propylene glycol?

If you search for that term on a boat supply sight, it comes back with marine antifreeze, so it looks like im off to walmart for some RV and marine antifreeze.

The "environmentally safe" antifreezes use propylene glycol, but you're going to get a mix of glycol and water. Just go to Amazon and search for it. About $15 a quart.

i dont think it has to be 100%. the thing is to be as close to water density, but not foam or bubble when shaken up. The whole not freezing part is probably a nice touch as well.

Ill be sure to update after i test, but i think its going to work fine.

Re: Question about reinstalling in hull transducer.

I believe that you asked about mounting it right?
If it is mounted as a through the hull, make sure that there is no air pocked in adhesive that you us to mount it. They will not work through air, it must be in solution with no air bubbles.

FWIW.....

this one is a little different. you mount a base tot he hull, then fill that base with fluid. the transducer twist locks onto the base.
