Ok, so I replaced the impeller in my alpha one drive. I'm now trying to reinstall outdrive back onto bell housing. I watched Chris's youtube video but I'm not sure that little shift shaft. If I at the back of the boat looking towards the bow should the shift shaft(not sure what the exact name is) be pointing towards 12 o'clock? It seems as though it will only travel between about 7 and 10 o'clock. Did I assembly the two halfs incorrectly?

Place shifter in full forward position. Rotate shift foot on out drive to 12 o'clock (facing forward toward bow). Rotate prop counter clockwise until it locks in place. Put a bungee cord on the prop to keep it from moving and slide the drive in. You can hold the prop to keep it from moving but bungee works easiest,

I replied to your other post. If the shift shaft is not facing forward when you have it in forward gear, then you have it off a spline.

shift foot on outdrive will only move to between about 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock. 10 o'clock is as far as it will go, what am I doing wrong? Did It did something wrong when I put it back together? Perhaps it should have been at 12 o'clock when I put the two half's back together or something?

Yep. The lower needs to be locked in forward and the shift shaft facing forward when you put the halves back together. I learned the hard way on my first attempt.

Yes.... travel is between 10 and 12.... You need to split your drive apart again, and put the splined shift shaft fully CW as far as it will go while turning the prop CCW till it "locks" then restrain it (prop) with a bungee cord. Then put the halves back together while ensuring the shift "shoe" on the top of the intermediate shift shaft is pointing at 12 oclock when it is engaging the splines of the lower shift shaft. This is assuming it is a pre-genII alpha one drive.

If you have the lower off, and you are looking down at it from the top, then the shifter will go from 10 - noon. With 10 being reverse.... 11 being neutral... and 12 being forward.

If I remember correctly it's 10 and 12. The easy way to verify is when it is at 12 the prop will lock up when turned counter clockwise, if it locks up clockwise your in reverse not forward

10 and 12.Before mating the two halves the shift splines in the lower must be rotated clockwise and the upper installed with the shifter in the 12 oclock position as stated above.

10:00 reverse, 11:00 neutral, 12:00 forward give or take a few minutes. it never goes pat 12:00 unless its installed wrong or the shift spool is worn

Looking down on the top of the intermediate shift shaft (in the drive), it should be pointing straight forward for FORWARD and about 60 degrees to PORT when in REVERSE. Somewhere in the middle is NEUTRAL...

HTH,

Chris......
