My boss has a 17 foot Tracker Bass boat with a 1985 Mercury 150, 3yr old Minn Kota trolling motor, and Tracker trailer. The boat has not been in the water for 2 years and unfortunately has been sitting in his yard, uncovered and neglected. He has decided to sell it. I am interested but there are some problems. He has said that the stator is bad and needs replacing. Let me begin this technical session by saying I know nothing about outboards. He said the motor has anywhere from 3000 - 4000 hours on it. Other than the stator he says it runs great. What would the cost be to replace the stator? What is this motor worth if it runs... satisfactory? As for the boat, it has been neglected and I do not know what it is worth. What should I look for? What is acceptable and what is not, as far as neglected things? The trailer is in good condition, no problems there.
What would this package be worth? Any replies would be greatly appreciated!
thanks again!

First thing you want to do is check the compression on the engine. Seems very high in hours, so you really need to check it over good.

Howdy, Jersey.. .

If the engine has 3000-4000 hours on it it is well past normal life for a carbed 2 stroke engine, even a Merc.

I had one of those mid-80s Tracker Tournament 17 bassboats. I think it has been grossly overpowered (mine was a rocket with 70hp!)and if it has been sitting out in the weather it is full of rot.

I can't think of any reason except maybe company politics to consider buying it. It is not worth hauling away.

Well, that's my opinion, anyway. Others may see a potential goldmine in it.

:)

Thanks for the input guys. Is the package worth getting just for sake of the motor (IF, and only IF, it doesn't need anything major) and trailer? He wants $2000 for everything?

Hi Jersey
From your description, this rig sounds like it's shot. I haven't seen it,so this is just an opinion. You also state you are inexperienced at boating. I would think for 2 grand you could find a race ready rig. One that you can test run before you buy. Unless you know your junk, I would stay out of the junk business. Look for a rig that shows some pride in ownership. You will be much happier fishing than working on bosses old wore out junk. Here's a thought take your 2 grand and make a down payment on a brand new rig. Now your fishin!
