Question about NY law - Over-long load

I don't see this anywhere in the State towing thread & wondering how it works in NY.

We've all seen trailers with over-long loads hanging off, going down the road with a red flag or cloth tied to the back end of the object. Seems to me back in the day, lumber yards even used to give out the red flags if you bought long lumber that you had to trailer. I was considering pulling a too long load on my 4x8' utility trailer and got wonderg if this is actually legal in NY, and if so, what's the maximum length of overhang permitted. (I've since decided on another way to trailer the load.)

Anyone know about this? Sitll wondering...

That's a very good question. I know utility crews (NYSEG) have the telephone poles overhanging the trailers by quite a bit with just a red flag attached to the end. Have yet to see one stopped and ticketed for it.

I bet the local DMV would have a better answer for you...

Ayuh,... That IS a Good question,... I donno what exactly the Law is on it,...

Personally, I've been haulin' wagons all over the country, 'n Alot of it in NYS, for the last 40 years,...
I've always hung a flag on any overhang up to 4', maybe 6'....
Any longer than that, I figure out a way to shorten the load, or lengthenin' the wagon....

All of my fleet of wagons have extended well beyond standard length tongues on 'em...

For some reason, 4' sticks in my mind, but I don't know if that's just legend that I have in my head.

You're probably right, but the funny thing is, whenever I have a question like this, the iboats forum is the first place I think of!:thumb:

For us the total length by law can only be 3 feet past the stop lights (flaged), otherwise the end of the object must be illuminated with a remote stop light/flashy indicator light of its own.

Mindya, that being said I still see trucks with 45 foot power poles on them going down the road with 12-14 feet over hanging the rear of the truck with just a red flag in the daytime.

Can't find the NY law but the Ohio law is ....

WARNING FLAGS
Over length vehicles and loads or vehicles and loads with a rear overhang of four (4.0) feet or greater shall
display a single flag at the extreme rear if the over length or projecting part is two (2.0) feet wide or less.

Two flags shall be displayed if the over length or projecting portion is wider than two (2.0) feet and the flags should
be located to indicate maximum width.

Warning flags shall be 18 inches square, red or orange in color, in good repair and free of printing or other
markings.
Flags shall be securely fastened by at least one corner or securely mounted on a staff.

---------------------

As long as the Total length of everything doesn't exceed 65ft.(OH) It can overhang all you want.
Other state are probably similar.

EDIT:
NY Summary.
See the "Legal Vehicle - No Permit Needed " drawing on page 3.
Looks like NY wants 24 inch Flags during the day, and Red Lights at night.

I think you need a warning flag if the load extends beyond the tailer or bed. My local Home Depot has red ribbon at the loading area. I have loaded up my bed a few times to have someone come outside and staple red ribbon to my lumber. Look at this way I don't think you will get pulled over for having it on.
