Question about my new Honda R12

Just bought a brand new leftover 2004 R12. Seems like a really cool ski. Much nicer than my old 1990 waverunner 500.

I've got a couple questions about it.

I bought it from Track and Trail in State College, PA. When I picked it up, I asked if it was winterized, and the salesman said no. Although I keep it in my heated garage, I thought it would be a good idea to run some anti-freeze through it.

Yesterday I started it for the first time. Everything by the book, I had my wife ready to turn on the hose once it stated. It surprised me how hard it was to start. I figured with fuel injection, it would light right off. Instead, it started and immediately stalled, a couple times, after the second attempt, I held the throttle at around 2000 RPMs, and it seemd to idle fine after 5 sec or so. I didn't turn on the water until it was running right, so there wasn't any chance of it injesting water. Once it started, it seemed to run fine. I ran it for 20 min or so on the hose, varing the RPMs from idle (2 bars) to about 3000 RPM's.

Are they all this cranky when cold? Should it idle higher when its warming up? Granted, it was 44 degrees out, a much cooler temp than it was designed for. It seems to restart just fine when it is warmed up. My wife and I can't get over how quiet it is.

After I ran it for 20 min on the hose, I shut it down, set up my submersible pump and my 5 gallon bucket of antifreeze. I restarted the ski, then plugged in the pump, and pumped 5 gallons of pink anti-freeze through it with a submersible pump while it was running. After the anti-freeze got pumped through, I shut off the pump, and reved the ski up to about 3000 RPM for about 5 sec and shut it off.

Thats the way I always did my old ski, any it made more sence than what the book says. Any problems with that method? Logically, it seems better to me, it just like following the flushing procedure in the book, except its being flushed with anti-freeze rather than water.

I fired it up in my garage this morning for a couple sec, it was 55 degrees in the garage. Again, it didn't want to run unless I gave it a little gas(2000 rpm)
I only ran it for 10 sec or so, since I wasn't going to hook up water.

Should I be taking this thing back to the dealer, over its cranky cold starting, or is that just the way they are? Maybe I should I just wait until spring and see how it does?

I'm also considering taking it to Marathon, FL on vacation with me next week. I'm just a little afraid of towing it all the way there (1200 miles), only to have it not work right. I guess I'm being paranoid, it is brand new.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Question about my new Honda R12

don't run it for short periods of time (like 5-10 seconds during the winter). These plugs foul very easily and they don't clean up well. They are about $12/each!

I have a 2004 F12x and have fouled 1 set this way. Once you have it winterized, leave it alone until you can get out and really run it. It needs to be able to get up to proper operating temp to keep from fouling these iridium plugs.

These are very reliable. If for any reason it fails to start, take out the 10mm socket, remove the spark plug coils and plugs and look at them. Most likely it will be fouled. Mine has only failed to start once and it's when I was starting it during the winter "just to make sure it still starts". I've seen gotten a little wiser and leave it alone. It starts right up in the spring after 3-4 months of storage.

Hope this helps!

Re: Question about my new Honda R12

Hello, I have two honda aquatrax, a f12 and f12X.
you will love the honda's
They will run a lot better when they are broken in, the engines are just a little tight when they are new. Read the manual and follow the instructions on the break in.
Kelton krew is correct about running the engine, just leave it alone until spring, you do not want to foul the plugs as they are very expensive.
also i would not run it for 20 min on the hose I think the manual suggests 10 min tops.
enjoy your new toy this summer. It will run good, it's a Honda!

Mike

Re: Question about my new Honda R12

Thanks guys. It probably was less than 20 min on the hose. I really just wanted to make sure it was warmed up before I pumped anti-freeze into it. I wonder why it would matter, what happens after 10 min?

I can't wait to ride this thing.

I read the entire manual. The break in seems pretty straight forward. I think I'll do as it says and just take it easy until it has ten hours and I change its oil and do the 10 hour service. After that, I'll consider it fully broken in.

Re: Question about my new Honda R12

the breakin on the non turbo unit takes a long time, i think it was over 8 hours until you can really go fast.(first tank of fuel) it only takes 20 min to change the oil, buy a good oil extractor and a filter wrench at autozone.
make sure you are good on the oil check procedure as it is kinda of complicated. do not overfill the oil. I bought my F12 from a crappy dealer and they had 1.5 qt of oil overfilled. the boat ran better when i drained the excess oil.
