Like some others, I own quite a few LP's from years gone by. Since I have already bought the music, is it illegal to download those songs from one of the free music-sharing services? I'd like to have them in MP3 format.

why don't you convert the lp's to digital and put them on the computer and just download them that way. probably not as far as the question goes

Probably would fall under "unauthorized reproduction", but what-ever. They have already got your 4 bucks for that Deep Purple album. ;-)

Maybe the RIAA offers discounts on sterophonic needles.

If your receiver or record playing system has an audio out jack you could plug it into an audio in jack on your PCs sound card. I then use a piece of software called Replay Radio (or like software). It will create MP3 files of anything that goes through the sound card. You then burn CDs from the MP3 files. I use this primarily for recording off of any web radio station.

Re: Question about music downloads

Due to the current DRM laws it is illegal to download any song that you have not paid for unless you pay for it again. It is illegal to download any song that you may own on another, non-digital medium. Basically, if you did not download the song from a legitimate online source you broke the law! The jacked up law does not care if you own a legally purchased LP, cassette or CD.

There are a few movements out there to correct this. Please contact your congressman and let him/her know that you want fair use rights for all your media files. If he/her votes against this you will vote against him/her.....................
