I have a 77 115hp Mariner I removed the lower unit to check the impeller to see if it needed to be changed and it started leaking this liquid can someone tell me what it is and how doto I refill it? It almost looks like water which is what i thought it was at first but it has a smell to it. here is a picture of where some of the fluid was when fully removing the lower unit.
any help would be appreicated.

thanks

Re: Question about lower unit

Drain the lower unit lub. If it looks and smells like the fluid in the picture it is the lower unit lub. How it got where it is probably through the drive shaft or shift shaft seals. Regardless - it appears you have a lower unit that is leaking water into the gear lub. You drain the lower unit through the screw in the bulge of the lower unit behind but above the skeg. The vent screw is a little higher on the leg. You fill from the bottom up until fluid comes out the vent. Install the vent screw, then the fill screw. Use new gaskets.

Ayuh,....

Water in the Gear Lube leads to Shredded Gears, Bearings,+ Shafts........

Re: Question about lower unit

There are two seals and a gasket in the waterpump that keep the gear oil confined to the gearcase. The waterpump base gasket and the waterpump base Oring are contained in the kit pictured. The other seal is the driveshaft seal installed in the waterpump base. If it is leaking gear oil into the pump, this seal is bad.

Re: Question about lower unit

the mystery part is the key that locks the waterpump impeller to the drive shaft

Re: Question about lower unit

ok this weekend i started replacing some parts on my lower unit and found that this support plate had a crack in it. Normally i would just replace it but everywhere i have looked so far have said it is discontinued. Will it hurt anything with it being cracked? I was thinking if it mattered much i might be able to get someone to weld it back together.
