Hey guys Im new to this site, and I think is a great site. Im hoping you guys can help me out. I am about to purchase a bass boat with an Evinrude 115hp on it the inline 6 engine(I believe it is early 90s model could be late 80s). I went and looked at it and the owner got it cranked up and it idled fine. He said he the last time he went out, the water pump went out and before he could catch it number 3 took a shot. Mechanic told him there was a hole in the piston and the other 5 had good compression. The guy I am buying the boat also has a parts engine identical to the one on it. I know this is an over played question but what is my best bet to fix this engine? Thanks guys for reading

An Evinrude inline 6?

Anyway, expect catastrophic damage to that powerhead. Seldom does it end with just one piston.

inline 6 mercury, timing caused this problem.overheat would have taken out top piston.inline 6's you have to back timing down 2 degrees, prop it at no less than 6000 rpm @ wot & richen carbs for it to servive.

If this is really an Evinrude 115 HP, it is definitely not an inline six and it is also NOT a six cylinder at all. It is a V4. Anyone interested in the bridge I have for sale?

Sure! As Long as I don't have to use a evinrude 115 inline 6 to get to it.:D

It'll cost you more to fix that motor than it's worth. If you really want the boat, offer to buy just the boat and trailer. It shouldn't be to hard to find a good used 115hp with all the cylinders in proper working condition.

Missed that one by a mile huh? :) A hole in the piston is not a good thing. It's disassembly time, examine the bore for damage. If it can be cleaned up with very minor honing, a new piston and set of rings should put you back in business provided everythng else is good to go. If the cylinder is badly damaged, its off to the rebuilder or time for a rebuilt power head.

As said the inline 6 merc is junk at this point. You would be doing the guy a favor buying the boat.BUT,at your rock bottom price. The boat needs total rigging change if you upgrading to a newer eng.regardless of manufacturer. This is an oMC(johnson /evinrude forum). The controlbox, wiring cables, guages are likely very old. Therefore, should you decide to buy a newer OMC,the guages, controlbox, cables need changing. If the present eng.has trim and tilt,it would have additional hoses and a tnt unit bolted somewhere in the boat.Unless you see a boat you just NEED to have because its nice and clean.I would look elsewhere for less trouble.Changing out power ,especially paying labor at $75-$100 an hr,can make a good deal become a money pit FAST.

Well I believe I could easily get what I have in it from the trailer. It is an 88 Performance Bass Boat. I can't seem to find any information on this model though. Im gonna start dis assembly prolly tomorrow if I cant fix it Ill just try to pick up a 100 hp somewhere used. There may be nothing wrong with the parts engine he said he hadnt checked it.
