I have a question about gell seal that I be using to seal the crankcases of my 175 Johnson . The manual tells you to use omc gell seal and to prime with loctite primer . First do I need to use the primer and IF SO which one do I use and where do you get it ? I also heard that loctite 518 is the same as gell seal , is this true ? Thanks !

Just make sure halfs are clean from old sealer as it will leave transparent layer on halfs. Scotchbrite halfs and clean with a good degreaser( I use acetone) and let dry for a few minutes. Install 518 sealer (same stuff) w no primer. Apply 1/16 bead on halfs and around bolt holes.Install and torque to spec's.

Those case halves have to be absolutely clean of old sealer. A real sinking feeling is to have that engine all together, and have a leak spitting out the case halves. You don't want that to happen on that V-6, you are looking at a lot of work. I would really advise a OEM manual, and follow the directions. On any engine using gel seal, I start with a fresh tube, and clean my hands' with soap, and water before applying. This is cheap insurance against one hell of a lot of repeat work. The manual even advises using a black-lite to make sure the halves are clean of old sealent.

Re: question about gel seal II

When I put my small 5.5 together and it was spitting at the seam in a spot, I tried several things to patch it (being lazy and not wanting to split it again) like gasket sealer, silicone etc but they all failed and I ended up using jb weld and it's still there working great. I was surprised it held on so well.
