ok. Possibly dumb question. I removed the rear cover held on with 3 bolts and found the captured ball and sleeve was pretty much frozen in that bore. Cleaned it up and shift effort is less. Question is, the 2 compartments- are they both suppose to be filled with lower unit lube? Mine have lube in both sections and wondering why it’s not self lubing? I tilted unit up and clamped off reservoir line before removal and very little lube was lost.

There should be no gear oil in that section unless the seal is leaking. You should have found oil in the shift cable cavity too

Yep oil in both. Wondering if it just flowed in as I removed the cap with the seal. So remove cap, suck out oil and reinstall?

There is a seal on top and bottom of the shaft, most cases the upper is the one that fails, but should replace both

Got it. Going to run the boat this weekend, drain lube down, then remove cover and see if it’s the shaft seals that leaked or if it was just my sloppy work. I lean towards my sloppy work, as that sleeve was pretty well frozen in the bore of the cover, and the cover did not have any lube on the inside of it.
