question about automatic oiling system

I've got a friend with a 1980 150 johnson. It fouls plugs, excesive smoke, and runs rough. The plugs are oil fouled. Can a person regulate how much oil the pump puts out. Or just do away with it and premix the gas. Any help would be appreciated.

i am no expert but I've read that the problem could be cracked and leaking gas lines alowing more oil per unit of gas

Is this an oil injection fuel pump (also known as VRO and OMS) or some other system. I don't think that 1980 engines had VRO/OMS.

We probably should start with a model number.I don't think the 150's had an oil pump before 1984.

DHP is correct. No oil pumps before '84'.

I'd be looking at carburetors. Time to rebuild them and replace every hose under the hood.

What spark plugs are you using?

I was wrong, it is an 86 model. I am not sure what plugs.

Like was mentioned before, the most likely cause for over-oiling is an air leak someplace before the VRO unit. That will also cause the rough running you described earlier.

It's possible to get an incomplete burn with the wrong plugs too. Start with the basics. What plugs are in it?
