Got a mercruiser 5.0 in a small british ski boat. After stripping, cleaning and rebuilding the standard quadrajet it still runs poor. No acceleration and lumpy with poor starting.

So I think the carb is junk.

(timing is good, new cap, arm and leads etc)

Been offered an as new mercarb 2 barrel which is cheap.
I guess power will be down a little with this as its only 2 barrel but thats not an issue really. Just want it smooth and running well.

Is the mercarb suitable for the 5.0? Will it match up with my inlet manifold? I've been told the carb is for 5.0 or 5.7 engines I just don't know if the manifolds are different from what I have now.

Any help?

Re: Quadrajet junked, are Mercarb's any good?

The QJet is a 4bbl carb and the Mercarb is a 2bbl carb, you could almost set the Mercarb in the intake hole of the Qjet.
You would need to replace the manifold, and probably part of the linkage.
There are a lot of the Mercarbs out there, especially from the 4 and 6 cylinder engines, if you don't have one for a 5.0 or a 5.7L engine it won't work.
