Is that Palm Desert? You're going to be a little late to see the desert flowers in bloom, unfortunately. And yes, it will be hot (and possibly quite smoggy) in the day, and potentially very cold at night. Why are you going there in August?
Palm Springs is nearby if you're wanting some $pa treatments or the wife likes $hopping

Plenty of those "desert moonscape" type golf courses in the area.
A must see is Joshua Tree Nat'l Park. It is like another world. Hit it from the North off the 62 from either Joshua Tree (if you want to see more Joshua Trees) or 29 Palms (if you want to see more rock formations), exit on the South on I-10. Bring lots of drinking water in with you

And if you want to do some hiking, bouldering or primitive camping, that's your spot.
Salton Sea is not that far away either, if you want to go see another un-earthly place.
