Re: PWC Storage (winter)

ok first of all, what the heck is winter? get some fogging oil , run the engine out of fuel and fog it as it starts to shut down.pull the plugs and fog the top of the cylinders.put the plugs back in. remove the ground wire from the battery. remove the exhaust hose from the muffler and place a piece of heavy plastic over the exhaust pipe , to keep critters out. this keeps moisture from working its way back up the exhaust to the crank case. Leave the seat loose and the compartments open to dry out and spray it down inside with silicon spray NOT WD40!!! If you have fuel it the tank add stabil to it. Grease the pto one last time.Thats about it.don't think i forgot any thing.

Jeff: Do you not have to add any antifreeze to the cooling lines or blow them out with compressor? If so which lines. Thanks for your info. I just want to make sure I can do it myself.

Darryl

Re: PWC Storage (winter)

well truthfully I do not have any winter I had 20 of them and that was enough for me, haven't seen winter in 32 years.I would imagine if you pull the hoses on top of the head and blow air in the fittings it will expell the water, would probably not really matter what one, there is usually a small arrow stamped by the hose nipple on the head. anti freez would keep it from corroding with no water in it so that may be ok but I don't think it is necessary, there is a drain behind each jug they go in to a T fitting and go to the exhaust these hoses allow the block to drain so I don't think any anti freez would stay in the block any way just be sure the hose is not blocked or water will stay in the water jackets.

Jeff, How you “run the engine out of fuel and fog it as it starts to shut down” Do you add fog oil in the tank if so how much? and isn’t better to store jet ski with full tank

ok good question, simple answer. turn off the fuel at the selector. have the air cleaner top open , get a can of fogging oil at home depo in the tool section about 2 dollars its in a spray can, it sticks to things.carpenters use it for saw blades etc. any way as you hear the engine stArt to idle rough ,spray the oil in to the air cleaner and it will smoke a lot and then stall. remove the plugs shoot it in the plug holes and put the plugs back in . Next season be ready for some smoke when you first start it up but thats a lot better than a siezed crank shaft.

Re: PWC Storage (winter)

Chiboka...to winterize, no need to drain or run out fuel, in fact full tank of fuel is better to reduce condensation. The fuel needs to be stabilized, however, with a good fuel stabilizer (about $4 worth will do 20 gallons of fuel). Don't get the cheap stuff, you'll know the good stuff because one ounce is recommended for 2 to 2.5 gallons. The cheap stuff says one ounce will stabilize 1 gallon of fuel.

To winterize:
1 - Add fuel stabilizer to fuel
2 - Run engine on hose enough to be sure 'stabilized' fuel has entered engine.
3 - Switch to running engine on antifreeze solution You may need a kit or a bucket with an attachement to feed the cooling system, just like the hose attachment.
4 - Wait until you see solution is exiting, and run another 3 minutes or so.
5 - Using an engine fogger, like 'Engine Stor' or other brand, spray into carb or air intake.
6 - Spray for about 10 to 12 seconds, or engine may stall (it's OK).
7 - Remove each spark plug and squirt engine fogger into each cylinder.
8 - Although not specific to winterizing, there are other things that can/should be done at end of season or regularly - lube drive shaft, check impeller condition and alignment, tune up for next season so you're ready to go.
9 - Next season...don't forget to replace plugs, start engine with the old plugs if possible, burn off engine fogger, then replace with new plugs.

Any one else have a different procedure??

Re: PWC Storage (winter)

great sight! will probably save some money with all the great suggestions.
anyway, i read all the winterizing posts. i have a yamaha fx140. i added the sta-bil to the fuel.
i talked to dealer and he said i don't have to fog the fx140. is this do to the fuel injection setup?
he said just start it up for a few seconds to get the water out and thats it.
should i fog the spark plug area?
also, what kind of grip can i use to remove the oil filter on the fx 140.
do i need to grease driveshaft as in other posts i've read and how is that done? thanks, dano.

Re: PWC Storage (winter)

free advise, the thing that worries me on 4 stroke engines is the valves,I would still fog the engine as it will coat the valves and valve stems, sitting can cause the stems and seats to get rust on them,It certainly can't hurt to coat them, I would un hook the plug wires and spray some fogging oil in the breather while cranking the engine for 10 seconds. It may extend the life of the top end. It certainly will not harm anything.

go to sea doo.net
they have a great link to winterizing
you must use anifreeze, it only takes about a quart on most models

Mike

Re: PWC Storage (winter)

heres what i do to my fx140,
-flush clooling system
-spray foggin oil into ea. v stack for 15 sec.(gotta go quick)
-lub all cables, both ends, some with marine
grease and some with cable lub
-disassemble QSTS handlebar end and lub w/marine grease, also marine grease for the pully end.
-lub jet nozzle pivot points.
-add sta-bil to fuel and top off fuel tank. i do this prior to flushing the cooling sys. for the last time to get the sta-bil into the fuel sys.
-lub intermediate housing thru grease zert with marine grease
-remove batt. and put on a trickle charger after toping off cells with distilled water if nessassary
-clean hull and wax it
-change eng. oil
-spray engine and jet pump extior with silicon
nope i don't use antifreeze at this point. there seems to be a delima about this. don't see in the yamaha service manual anything about doing the antifreeze thing so i don't. i'm going on the idea that air don't freeze.
lastly i put the seat on it leaveing it ajar, not latched for hopefully some air flow and put cover ontoit. jim

Re: PWC Storage (winter)

Buy the complete shop manual on cd for about $10/$15 on ebay. Many seadoo models have specific ways of draining, hoze clamping, antifreezing that are unique to each model. If you don't do it exactly you can end up with a cracked block and/or exhaust jacket. :(
