Three equal partners want to close shop and split the assets equally
total assets = 360,000
each gets 120,000
one decides he wants a 15,000 asset
so his share is 5,000 in the asset
he plays 5,000 to each of his partners out of his share {120,000}
5,000 is added to each of his partners share
it works out his share is now 110,000 and he has the asset
so the partners their share is now 125,000 each
why does it look like the other 2 partners received 15,000 each
recap 360,000 divide by 3 = 120,000
15,000 divide by 3 =5,000
from his share deduct 10,000 totals 110,000 his share
add 5,000 to each of 2 other partners their share now 125,000 each
why does each partner end up with 15,000 more totalling 30,000 when asset is 15,000

Re: Puzzle

Because the problem is set up incorrectly. He can take the $15,000 asset and another $105,000 and he'll have $120,000 just like the othe 2 guys.

Creative accounting. Classical case of counting parts of the question twice and omitting others.

Re: Puzzle

Got me stumped they all get 120,000 if he takes the 120,000 and buys the asset after ....he's left with 105,000...I get that but if he buys it during the settlement his share is 5,000 of the asset...ok and he gives the partners 5,000 each for their share of the asset he ends up with 110.000,ten g's less than his original share wait I think I got it maybe
360-15= 345 ....115 +5 =120 leaves him 105 +15 =120 nope

110 +10 =120yes 115 +5 =120
thats it 110 is his share they get 5 more

Yes he is left with 105,000.....but he also has the 15K asset....that's 120K....same as the other 2.

The way you have it written out makes it too much like the three walnut shells and the pea....:)

Re: Puzzle

Yea but where it gets tricky they all own the asset worth 15K
so if you take it out that leaves 345
each gets 115 then....so to pay them off he has to give each other partner 5K which leaves him with 105K
the other partners now have 120k each
both have 15K more than him
so 15k +15K =30K
105k+15=120
115K+5=120
115K+5=120
____________
equals 360K not 345K

Re: Puzzle

Because after it is all said and done

Buyer of Asset = 110,000 + 15,000 asset = 125,000
Others = 125,000 in funds.
All is equal.

Re: Puzzle

You failed to account for the fact that he already owned $5000 of the asset, so it only cost him $10K to buy it and pay off his partners.

Re: Puzzle

Last answer in my post #4 forgot to say that each of the other partners end up with 5K more....that means they are paid 125K ......So he gets paid 110K from his original 1/3 share from all assets remember 360K total assets equal shares divded buy three ,they all own .......the shares are 5K each partner... equalling 15K So he has to buy his partners shares out at 5K per share X2 partners Equals 10K from his total equal 1/3 of all assets 360K Bottom line he recieves the 15k asset for 10K as he already owns 5K of it His total pay out is 110K.... partners 125K,,, with his 5K buyout paid X2 each other partner is paid 125K
