1977 70 hp evinrude. when i put it into gear (forward/Reverse) in a sort of slow fashion it gives me a slow "click, click, click, click) then it engages the farther i push it. or i can go faster and it gives a "click" and engages. I'm guessing this is normal as its just catching the teeth and putting it into gear. but my question is it better to do it slowly or fast? I'm new to boating and this is only my second boat. first one was an electric shift rude. nightmare of a motor. anyway thanks for the help.

One quick motion, you want to get into gear as fast as possible, the click click click is the clutch dog wearing out which is bad.

QUOTE: "move shift/throttle lever BRISKLY"........."after shifting move lever slowly to increase speed"

After you change a clutch dog and gear, you will never shift slowly again. They arent cheap.
