manual says final torque on heads 41 fps on short bolts 48 on meds and 56 on longs,

What is the manual number you are using ??????

Have no clue what manual you are using or what fps stands for, but your numbers are also wrong.
The picture below is from the OEM service manual.
NOTE: On the first pass, all bolts are tightened in FOOT POUNDS , in the next step they are torqued in DEGREES not ft. lbs.

There is nothing to convert, manual is just referring to high school geometry. There are 360 degrees in a circle...180 degrees in a 1/2 circle...90 degrees in a right angle, etc...

Degrees are just telling you how much farther to sweep the wrench after reaching the torque spec given. As for a tool that would tell you what the numbers mean...you'd need a protractor...a torque wrench won't do degrees.

No wonder all the information is wrong, that's a clymers junk manual. Throw it away, they have so much wrong informtation in them it's a wonder anyone can put an engine together with one.
Here is a list of the manuals for your engine, download them free.

You can not convert degrees to ft lbs, you need to use a degree wheel shown in the link below. You may be able to rent one from AutoZone, they are easy to use and come with instructions.

You need to start over, with new head gaskets. You have already crushed them improperly, and nothing will be accurate after that.

You could also revert back to the old method of torquing Chevy heads to 65 ft lbs. Just tighten all your bolts to your present 56 ft lbs you have on your long bolts, then follow by going to 65 on all in the proper sequence.
I wouldn't, but that choice is there if you want to try it.

Thanks, Great help, I won't make that mistake again...I'm starting over just to easy at this point to do it right. What can you tell me about the volvo penta intake gasket on this boat. The old gasket did not have the matal inserts?

I don't recall ever seeing inserts in those gaskets. Can you post a picture of them?
