96 wellcraft with a 4.3 mercruiser. I have a guy coming today to replace all my bellows for me, but I want to be hands on with the impeller job since it plan on doing it every other year. Just trying to get an idea.

One pump won't hurt anything. You need to put Alpha drives in gear for removal. They must be removed to change the impeller. Helps on reinstall. You'll know if your mechanic is any good if he does it. Leave it and see what he does ;)

Moving to Mercruiser section.

You really don`t need to go "full throttle" position, just in forward gear.

WOT forward is what is recommended, there is less chance of it being inadvertently bumped back to neutral. It is also not a bad idea to take a look underneath to assure that the coupler on the bottom of the upper shift is pointing straight ahead so the lower ss (intermediate ss on a alpha 1) can slip out.

Putting it into gear before dropping the foot allows you to align the shaft splines by turning the prop when you reattach the foot.

Start the coffee & have the boat uncovered. He will appreciate that more than anything!

WOT forward is what is recommended,

Where did that come from.
It's recommended by every Mercruiser manual (not after market) to put the drive into forward. Nothing else. It's to line up the shift shafts fore and aft when you remove the drive.
If you have people crawling around your boat while you are working on it, then you have more to worry about than the drive being in forward or not.

:facepalm:It is in the shift cable adjustment instructions, I knew I read it somewhere in the manual thought it applied to removal too. But it can't hurt.

I agree they say to put it in forward gear. I'm just saying Mercruiser does not say to put it to WOT to remove the drive. Adjusting the cable is not the same as removing the drive.
