Just got a 1970 Penn Yan 23ft with SBC 350 and OMC electric shift.

It has a push/pull steering. I also have the necessary parts (from helm to worm gear ) to convert it to Tru course. (from old project)

Is there a preference between the 2 systems?
Or should I just leave what works be?

I'm pulling motor and drive, so now would be the easiest if it's to be done

Both systems provide the same turning radius. Does the upper gearcase you will use have the 2 bolts against the upper starboard side of the gearcase retaining the plug for the worm gear? If so then the True course will be safe to install. If not I would stay with the push pull system. Are you sure the True course cable is the correct length?

The cable came from a foot longer boat.

I have a complete drive & intermediate housing that was Tru course from a previous salvage.

Will either choice " feel " better ?

Will the Tru course just make more possible places for leaks? And no other benefits?

I just converted from push pull steering on my boat to Tru course a few years ago.

I was also doing an outdrive conversion at the time , so a little bit different. But I wanted Tru course mainly for safety. My push/pull set up was giving a good amount of feedback to the wheel.

Imo the Tru course is not only safer but feels better too. I don't think it really adds any leak points . Its just one seal (Tru course or not you have a seal there ) and you pack it with grease anyways.

In this thread you can see the plate I made to cover up the push/pull hole in transom
