Re: Pure Stupidity

You know what is interesting, the Coast Guard never used their horn to get the boaters attention. Yelling is not the correct protocol. He didn't slow down or anything; very strange.

Yep...seems they deliberately intended to hit that guy. Nevertheless, there's a lesson to be learned here that we must all pay attention to our surroundings whenever operating a motor vehicle/vessel.

Re: Pure Stupidity

I wonder why the CC didn't take some kind of evasive action. They clearly saw the other boat. This may end up in court

The Coast Guard could have easily avoided this boat by simply slowing down. I agree, they should have blasted their horn. Obviously, the two on the smaller craft had no idea they were in the path of the Coast Guard boat. I'm surprised they aren't dead.

I need to refresh my brain about the rules of the water I guess, I thought that the boat coming from the right had the right of way . I thought if you hit another boat in the port side you would be at fault......

^^^^ What he said. The Coast Guard was the give way vessel in that situation. You should always watch all directions, but the fact is the Coast Guard Captain was legally at fault.

Man that was senseless. Freaking coast gaurd, instead of preventing an accident, they add to the statistics. They should have slowed down and blasted their horn and then rescue the men out of the water after scaring the crap out of them. But instead they said, hey look, there a boat coming our way. Let him 'em. .....Boooom....alright, now we have to rescue operations.

There probably wasn't any one paying attention at the helm on the Coast Guard ship ether.

whatever...

assummin it's real. which it looks to me like it is. the coasties were wrong. just watching that gives me even more distaste for authority. creatons. hope they go to the brig....

yes, the small craft skipper was wrong too as he never took evasive action either. but then again. he apparently didn't see the coasties (even though he should have). the coasties obviously saw him though. even took pictures to document their darn near grave mistake........let alone that they were the giveway vessel.......

Re: Pure Stupidity

Interesting...most people would think that the Coast Guard (like the police?) are never wrong. Here tho'...I think they blew it, or didn't blow it (the horn) for that matter. They could have prevented this themselves by sounding their horn and throttling back at least a bit. Using the ol' 'wait see if the other guy does the right thing' attitude is not always successful or the safest thing to do.
Regardless, the two guys in the boat didn't seem like they were the sharpest knives in the drawer either.
At least everyone walked away and is unlikely (hopefully?) to repeat what happened there.

I don't know guys. That doesn't look like any Coast Guard boat I've ever seen. The video starts by showing a Coast Guard 41 footer, but then they go to this other boat. It could be a Coast Guard Auxiliary (i.e. civilian) boat. When they're interviewing that guy, it looks like the boat in the background although it's hard to tell. And that boat has registration numbers which regular CG boats don't have, but Aux. boats do. Who knows.

Have to concur with DR, 2 different boats in the video.
Notice the bumpers on the 2nd boat?
None visble on the CG boat when the video first starts.

What caught MY eye was the much larger boat dead ahead of the CG vessel. It seemed the Coasties were heading right at that when they hit the speedboat.
