I had the idea of using my 17 gallon water holding tank for showering and for washing dishes, and then drinking only bottled water. I could rig a pump to draw water from the lake to refill the tank as needed. Has anybody done this? Does anybody put purification tablets in the water after doing this?

i would not. There would be debris possibly in the water, that would damage the pump, alge would soup up the system, and smell bad. Cleaning tablets may work but reguardless, I wouldn't do it.

Why? you could just put a thru-hull fitting in and hook the pump to that and get water anytime you need it. or even hang the pump over the side when needed plus you could take longer showers.. I get what your wanting just leave the holding tank out of the game, it will get nasty.

Forget the tank….install a raw water washdown system. Puts 60 psi, 6 gpm at your disposal.
I have a scoop type (thru-hull) intake on mine. Has never fouled, plugged, etc.
On-demand (pressure switch) so no tank required.
I have a 25’ hose with spray nozzle attached to mine. Most used accessory on the boat.
