I am pretty sure draining the oil out is less of a mess.

On a late model 40HP Mercury 4 stroke I have the option of draining or pumping the oil out....which is best????

Usually, I would run an engine for 5 minutes before draining it out. Is that really necessary if the oil is pumped out????

Re: pump or drain oil out

Running the motor usually ensures that settled particles are moved, mixed into the oil and are able to be removed.

Personnally, I beleive draining to get more old oil out vs pumping 'most' of the oil out.

I use duct tape and cardboard to form a funnel, guiding the oil to my pan. Whether on the trailer or floating a pan while in the water, I place a couple three absorbent pads under my pan, just in case I get a few errant drops.

Adequate duct tape and cardboard does wonders to keep the oil where I want it.

The *&^%$ is getting an absorb pad under the sideways mounted oil filters! They always leave a mess to wipe up.
