Pulling tubes with 89 bayliner?

I have an 89 bayliner with the 85hp force l-drive and was wondering if the factory hook at the rear of the boat could be used to attach a rope for pulling tubes. The hook is in the same place as the ski hooks on newer boats. I guess you'd use this hook for docking, it seems to be securly mounted but the boat is just fiberglass?<br /><br />Thanks in advance for any help!<br /><br />PS Don't want to find-out the hard way!!!!!

my 46 APACHE will pull a tube up a 9% grade at 87 Mph on GPS.<br /><br /><br />It should me fine. As long as there is no Structural rot and your Transom is ok you shouldn’t experience any problems.<br /><br />

Other times I just make a "Y" shape and hook the 2 ends onto the braces for the swim platform... that way the weight is distributed evenly thorough out the Transom.<br />

cdu6191,<br /><br />You should be fine, but check behind the transom, to see how well the cleat is supported. You could add a larger stainless backing plate if needed. I have the a cleat in the center location, as well, instead of the round style tow line hook-ups. I doubt your swim platforms are as sturdy as baja power's, but you could use a towing harness to the transom tiedown loops.

The Backing plate is a good idea, I thought the transom tiedown loops would be to low to pull a tube, that it might try to pull the tube under as you puwer up

The harness has a float, but if the tiedowns are low that you can't reach them, then not worth it. If you have cleats on the two outer edges, like I do, you could use the harness on that, to distribute the stress. We used a harness on a small 14' boat, and it was attached to the lifting handles.

I remember being towed by one in the early 90's, but tow rope was hooked to the to the 2 eyes on either side of the swim platform. I would check to see if the hook you want to use has a ply-wood backing before you try, if its just 2 bolts through the fibreglass I would not take a chance.<br /><br /> Jim

Thanks! while cruising at 79 you can get like 3 MPG but running WOT at 6900RPM I’m getting something like 0.97 MPG

Nice looking ride bajapower. Do you have a pilots license for that machine <br /><br />cdu6191 I would contact the mfr for their recomendations unless you can tell for certain what that hook is fastened to. If it a thru fitting make sure there is a decent sized backing plate on the inside to distribute the load.

I have an 88 Bay with an 85 on it the two hook are well secured believe it or not the os a large plywood backer and a big washer on both of the hook ends. I could not get it removed when I was rebuilding so i left them. They are used to hold down the boat when you trailer it so you gotta figure its gonna be strong enough.

I had the same boat/motor combo. Use a "Y" with a float and hook to the two trailer tie down eyes. Works well and keeps the rope out of the prop.
