Can you pull the PTO housing, without removing the entire engine?

I don't even want to tell you why, but lets just say it wasn't one of my brightest moves, and all the magnetic tools in the world haven't helped.

I'm debating on taking it to the dealer to pull the engine, but I'm sure I can handle the PTO removal, if it will come off with the engine still in the machine.

2007 155hp RXP

thanks,

Re: Pulling PTO Housing

I assume you are talking about the engine cover at the rear of the engine, you list a rxp 155 hp but rxp is supercharged etc and a different can of worms than a straight 155 hp 4 stroke.
one problem is pulling the drive shaft,, unlike the older 2 stroke engines that job requires a special set of drive shaft tools not only to remove it but to properly install it once you have it apart, I have done several drive shaft removals and it is a real pain in the butt.
once you have the drive shaft out the cover should not be all that difficult to get off. just don't break off any of the bolts
if you dropped something in by the drive shaft you may be able to access it taking the boot off where the drive shaft goes in to the back of the engine. not sure what you did but perhaps a strong shop vac where the oil filter sits would suck it out, I do that to change oil as it pulls out more oil than using the tube down the dip stick opening and a lot faster.

Good idea Jeff, with the shop vac. I'll give that a try.
Actually dropped a small spring into the oil filter housing which then disappeared into the engine. Yeah......don't ask.

I haven't given up yet, but I'm getting close. Its not the supercharged, its the 155hp, RXP had both engine options.

Thanks,

Re: Pulling PTO Housing

well it may work for you ,otherwise you have a big problem,
when you use the shop vac, plug in your dess key so the tops valve opens and have the filler cap off,, this will allow more air to flow in to the sump and more air flow through the sump where your spring is probably sitting. I would also angle the ski to the rear and to the right so the spring flows toward the oil filter location.
and if it comes out you owe me big time because you saved yourself a ton of work and money.. lol.

If Jeff's idea doesn't work look for a shop with a SeeSnake-should be able to find spring and snag it. Similar to drain inspection camera the Roto-rooter guys have.
