Pulling outdrive for first time...what to look for?

2007 VP SX-A outdrive...150 hrs or so
I am planning on pulling my outdrive off for the first time to inspect and re-lube, but do not know exactly what to look for as far as indications of abnormal wear or other potentially negative issues. Drive seems to be running perfect, so this will be purely for inspection and prev. maint. purposes.

I have turned wrenches on cars for years and feel comfortable with identification of parts, etc, but knowing what part you are looking at is different than knowing how that part should look when healthy vs. symptomatic or otherwise abnormal (e.g. I know how spark plugs should look when pulled...is there similar "tell-tales" to look for?)

I may have an authorized VP tech pull it, but I also would like to know what to look for just in case they are "less than honorable" with there repair recommendation(s).

Lastly, would this question be answered by a service manual available to purchase? Pulling the outdrive would be the most "invasive" level of work I plan on doing. All other maintenance procedures are simple enough without a manual (engine oil/filter, outdrive gear lube, etc.) and I don't want to spend the money on a manual unnecessarily.

When you pull the drive, you need to check the bellows for water intrusion, and or oil in the bellows. Oil would indicate the input shaft seal on the drive is leaking, water would indicate the bellows is leaking.
Check the alignment. This needs to be done yearly. Only way you can tell if something is wrong with mounts.
Check the gimbal bearing turns smooth, no roughness at all. Relube and clean out the old grease.
Check the ujoints for smoothness.
Lube the splines on the shaft before reinstalling the drive.
New seals and orings when reinstalling.
Go to the link below and put in your engine type or SN and download the owners manual, charts etc. for your engine.

Thank you, Don S.

That is exactly the type of info I am looking for.
