pulling my outdrive will mess my shifting cable?

hi there and thansk again for all the help in this forum I have to change my water hose coming in from my outdrive and I know is more easy if I pull the outdrive, my question is if I PULL MY outdrive will mess out my shifting cable thanks.

What year, what drive, what engine?

hi there i a pre-alpha mr/alpha my boat is 1979 engine mercruiser 228 305

It all depends. I just did my water intake hose on a pre-Alpha and I didn't need to pull the bell housing. In fact, I'm sure I could have done it with the outdrive in place, but I was lubing the u-joints anyway. If you pull the bell housing, you have to remove the shift cable and that's quite a job on the pre-Alpha. Pulling the outdrive means you have to be careful about the shift linkage inside of the bell housing, but that's a pretty simple task by comparison. Check this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=45252 for information on how to replace the hose without pulling the bell housing. For me it was a one-man job and it took most of an afternoon.
