It all depends. I just did my water intake hose on a pre-Alpha and I didn't need to pull the bell housing. In fact, I'm sure I could have done it with the outdrive in place, but I was lubing the u-joints anyway. If you pull the bell housing, you have to remove the shift cable and that's quite a job on the pre-Alpha. Pulling the outdrive means you have to be careful about the shift linkage inside of the bell housing, but that's a pretty simple task by comparison. For me it was a one-man job and it took most of an afternoon.
