Hi all, I have a cracked block. The only way I can afford to have the hobbies I have is to stay on a tight budget. Therefore, I have to pull a year 2000 carbed merc 5.7 out of my 19 foot VIP myself; it is married to an Alpha 1 gen 2. I found a new long block locally and I have a big shop and a forklift to do the work in. I think I have someone lined up to do the reinstall so for now I just need some help pulling it out. Can anyone please point to some detailed instructions on pulling this engine out of the boat? I have tools and time, just no instructions. Thanks for reading.

Not much instruction really...remove the outdrive (6 bolts I think) unit comes out all in one piece, but shift it into forward before you do this. Remove all the wires you see and mark them (theres really not that many on mine so I just kinda remembered where they went) then remove the lags holding the forward motor mounts and remove the aft mount bolts. Hook your crane up and start lifting slowly making sure you didn't forget to remove any grounding wires that goto the gimbal housing....like I did :)

Pick up a manual, everything is step by step in there.

Since you have to take them off anyways, depending on your boat this may be easier if you remove the exhaust manifolds first....I however had enough room to leave them on.

Re: Pulling 5.7 out of boat

I am no expert but have pulled one out of a boat. I also used alot of advise from this board. the people are very helpfull. What i can tell ya is take alot of pics before and during the process. This will answer alot when going back together. If you have ever pulled a car motor its basicly the same. Pull the drive first, put on your home made stand for further disasemble and maintance to the drive. Done with that.

Next undo any wireing thats conected to the motor., now is the time take a bunch of pics, Red goes here blue there ect. Undo inlet hose from transom inside boat ( the one coming from outdrive). Undo shift cable Bracket. Undo throtle cable bracket from carb.

Next would be to loosen front mounts then back mounts on flywheel cover.
Note: Now as stated in many other post if you undo the front mounts on the studs, then when you reinstall there is more of an adjustment or you can undo the lag bolts at the base in the stringers. One advantage is you now can check your stringers for rot?

Now what else would have to come off is all depending on how much room you have, if all is good hook up and jurk it. The more you can leave on the motor on reinstall the better. I may have skiped something butt from what i had to do, this is about the same.

I am sure the experts will add many more things. Good luck to ya

P.S. Before you turn the first wrench : do a bunch of research on this site it will help ya!

Re: Pulling 5.7 out of boat

In short...

Put control box in forward gear. Remove drive.
Disconnect batteries and remove negative cables from engine.
Remove battery positive cable from starter motor.
Remove water supply hose from transom assembly.
Disconnect ground continuity strap between engine and transom plate.
Disconnect trim gauge wires.
Disconnect drive oil monitor bottle hose (if fitted).
Disconnect power steering hoses from steering ram.
Unplug engine instrument harness.
Disconnect throttle and shift cables.
Disconnect lower shift cable from shift plate.
Loosen exhaust hose clamps.
Remove fuel supply hose and plug it.
Remove 2 rear mount screws.
Remove 2 side mount nuts.
Using a suitable hoist, lift engine clear of mounts.

Job done... (Don't think I missed anything)

Chris.......
