Does anyone have a complete instruction on how to rewind both springs on a 1973 evinrude 6 hp fisherman starter and install properly

The parts list only shows one spring !

I'm in Vic's and Boobie's corner.

I have that motor, and the OEM manual.
Two springs makes no sense, except that when the spring DOES break, then there are two pieces.

How did this situation develop? Any chance you broke the spring?

The manual in the link describes various types. I dont remember seeing one with 2 springs Even if there are I don't see how they can possibly be wound in opposite directions.


What is the model number ?

Its a double wound spring ?? Does this mean the OP's spring has broken into two parts, inner and outer sections

Thats actually a 1972 model but makes no difference AFAIK





It sounds as though you need a new spring # 3 in the diagram, Part number 0314500 ( around $70 ) If I am right about this ( I have 6hp but never taken the starter off it)

You should then be able to re-assemble by following the instruction in the manual I gave the link to earlier. Page 516 et seq.

Thanks everyone for the feed back on the starter spring it does look like it was broken so I ordered a spring.Thanks for the link for the manual Vic.S

This might be a stupid question but a friend told me that you could turn a Johnson 1972 Johnson 7.5 horsepower into a 10 horsepower by only installing a bigger carb.Is there any truth in that.

The only sure thing would be that you'd have a 7.5 hp with a bigger carb.

You can search through countless threads about this.....most common is "changing" a 9.9 into a 15 hp.
I saw someone call it the "Cinderella complex". You may have a pumpkin.

I've never read a thread where it was a success....The majority sentiment seems to be that by the time you change all the parts over, the cost and effort would not be worthwhile; best way to convert is to sell the 7.5 and buy a 10.

Sometimes the intake needs modification...and/or the exhaust.
You'll have to compare all the parts in at least those systems for commonality between the two motors and do your assessment based on that..
