I have a Mercury 50 and an Evenrude 40, both engines have the same problem. When I pull the cord to start the engines the cord doesn't grip and the engines dont turn over, the cord goes back in no problem. I have striped down, oiled and put the pully system back together but it didn,t make a difference.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is as I don,t have a clue.

Regards Rae.

raemond,

Usually there is a lever that is spring loaded that causes the rope spool to engage the flywheel. These springs, or the lever, sometimes break. It happens more often when the engine "sneezes" when the rope is being pulled outward.
