pull star doesn't engage fly wheel

when i pull the cord on my 1958 35hp sea horse it doesn't catch on the fly wheel and turn it it just spins freely, spring isn't broke because it winds it self back up. What is my probleme?

Pull the assembly off and inspect to see if the pawl's are extending outward as you pull the rope, there are 3 of them. There are springs that connect to the pawls , make sure they are there. If not the friction spring could be broken or the bolt holding it all together came loose. They have to go back together a certain way, F_R has explained this in the past in previous posts.

It is bang on, trying to do it any other way locks everything up, been there done that.

There is no sprinns on the pawls, is there suppose to be on for each? what do they connect to? i had been cranking it all day, i wonder if only one of them had a spring and it just finally broke, but i didn't see one anywhere. What kind of spring do i need?

This is the starter off of my 7.5, according to the diagram for your motor they are similar, see the 3 springs?

the pawls have holes in them for springs but on mine there is nothing to hook the other end of the spring to. i can see on yours there is place but on mine there isnt

The 1958 had springs when it was built. However, there was an update kit available some years later, which eliminated the springs. Possibly you have the kit?? There really isn't much to go wrong with the updated style. Is the center spindle rotating? It shouldn't. There is supposed to be a pin in there to prevent rotation. Try tightening the center bolt.

it has a pin on the bootom side, but there is a plastic piece that the pawls ride on, it could be spining?

It has been such a long time since I've looked at one. But I think the plastic bushing is supposed to stand still. For whatever it's worth, here is the stack-up:

found the probleme, the spring washer(#13 on stack up in previous post) is worn out,where can iget one of these?
