Pull rope stopped working?

I went to test my motor last night which is a 25hp Mariner manual (rope start). I pulled it one time and it started up for a second but then cut off. So I pulled it one more time and there was no resistance at all. An infant could have pulled it out. Anyway, I'm not too experienced with motors and I dont know if there is some kind of spring that might have popped or what but if anyone could please help and tell me what happened and if it is something that I can fix.

i think it is the recoil spring. does that sound right to anyone?

not enough infomation. is the rope hanging out loose. if not, does the flywheel turn when rope is pulled. be careful if you take recoil off and strip it as it`s got a very long spring in it, and i mean long. i find them a real pain to replace .although i have watched the man in the shop do it very quickly

the rope isnt hanging out loose it will pull back like it is supposed to. It just doesn't pull back fast like it is supposed to. And when you pull it out there is no resistance and you can tell that the engine isn't turning over or even trying to. The flywheel does turn when the rope is pulled. There is just absolutely nothing happening. Before when it was working, you would pull the rope and it was very hard to pull it out and you could hear the engine trying to catch. Now there is just nothing?

By the way does anyone know how much it costs to buy a new recoil spring?

if the flywheel is turning when you pull the rope then the motor is turning over or should be . if not it looks like the flywheel keyway has sheard

i guess i am confused is the flywheel the wheel that the rope is attached to or the wheel connected to the wheel that the rope is attached to?

please take this as well ment advice`. you dont seem to know much about outboards .. get a workshop manual for your motor and if you go to a library there are some good books on engine maintenance. the mariner agents here hold a information evening about once a year giving owners a basic idear on how to mantain outboards . maybe there is something like that nere you.
