I have an Evinrude 1974 6 hp outboard and the starter pull rope needs to be replaced. Not broken yet.

The starter is the type like and auto starter where the pinion twists up into the flywheel and engages the teeth.

I've looked up the part but there is no description of the rope. All replacement articles say replace with the same size.

AND THAT WOULD BE?

It looks like it is nylon .

cut a small piece and check home depot for something similar get the highest strenght /flexible for the size you need
but your dealer should have some for you ...can't be that expensive

with a 6hp, most likely 3/16" or 1/4" as Crosbyman stated, take a piece with you.

It is 1/8". 51-3/4" long. A dealer would cut it from his 772579 roll for you. It is not the normal hardware store stuff. It is a hard braid nylon rope.

The rope for recoils has almost 0 stretch. Be SURE that the rope is for recoil start application. A stretchy rope is no fun.

The rope is still intact but getting a little "iffy" . I can't cut a piece off. But thanks anyway.
Comments about stretch is something I completely forgot about Glad it was brought up.
Looks like 1/8 inch will do it.

Thanks all.

Use general purpose rope if you want to redo it every years ----use the real stuff if you want it to last------weed eater rope will also work-------true recoil rope is mush tougher.
