Pull Out Primer

I have a brand-spanking new 2004 25 horse Johnson (my third Johnson and they're all great :D !) with a pull out primer. Two pulls and then you leave it so the red line shows until it warms up, then close it, right? The local wrench says I should be sure to push it all the way back in once warm or else it will suck air and make the engine run rough. Shouldn't it be sucking extra fuel in this position? Isn't that how it supplies extra fuel for warm-up?

Re: Pull Out Primer

By the way, I've only dealt with pull out chokes before.........Never pull out primers. Anybody?

Re: Pull Out Primer

Pulling the primer out allows fuel to flow through it to the intake manifold, which in turn primes the engine. Having the primer set to the red line allows a slight bit of extra fuel to flow to the intake manifold area while the engine warms up..... you could look upon it as having a choke halfway closed.

Perhaps your local mechanic hooks his up to a air tank? (grin)
