As some of you know I have been working on a 1957 Johnson 10hp.

I was trying to pull the rope to crank it and it will not budge.

I have not used it in 5-6 years but it was cranking fine before I put up.

Any ideas? Motor frozen? something else?

Re: Pull Crank Stuck

Most likely the motor's frozen , and also most likely it's no big deal.
Remove the starter mechanism and try to turn the flywheel itself by hand. If it's still stuck, remove the lower unit and try again to make sure it's not that the lower unit is frozen up. You'll need to remove it anyway to replace the water pump impeller.
If it still doesn't turn, spray some penetrating oil down each spark plug hole towards the top of each piston. Let it soak for a while, preferably with the spark plug holes facing straight up. Then try breaking it loose with a ratchet on the flywheel nut. If it breaks loose, carefully turn the flywheel a few revolutions, feeling for binding or abnormal resistance. If none's felt, you're good to go.

Good luck!

Please, pull plug wires before rotating flywheel to prevent accidental firing.

Re: Pull Crank Stuck

Thanks Paul I did try to turn the flywheel with a ratchet but it did not budge.

I suspect it is the lower unit, because there was NO grease it it when I tried to drain it.

I will remove the lower unit and do the pentrating spray.

THANKS!!

Pulled off the lower unit, but it still will not turn.

Sprayed PB Blaster into the spark plug holes and let it sit overnight.

Hopefully, this will take care of it, if not I guess I will scrap it.
