Been looking at an aluminum boat which has stick steering. I have never had a boat with it, what are advantages/disadvantages? I know having not to get up & move is one advantage but how are they as far as control.

Re: Pros & Cons Of Stick Steering

I have had one, and liked it, except. . . .

It was on a small, light boat with 25HP used only on small, very protected water.

I would not use it with anything over 40HP, a boat over about 16' or in waters where a chop over 1.5' was likely.

TD has a stick steered boat. He will probably chime in.

Re: Pros & Cons Of Stick Steering

I've had several with stick steering, I actually prefer it for several reasons, first off it allows you to drive from the front of the boat, which both offsets weight from the stern and gives better visibility. Stick steer also frees up deck space since you do not need a console.
Stick steering is also quicker, it has a more direct ratio since it has to move the engine from left to right in a single arc, vs wheel steering which can take several rotations of the wheel to turn lock to lock.

I'm actually considering converting my 17' Duratech to a stick steer to get rid of my console altogether and to have a completely open boat which rides well with a single occupant. Being able to drive from the bow area will offset the weight of the engine, fuel, and batteries, plus make for much better visibility while underway.
