Motor in signature. Which way does the thrust washer go that sits between the reverse coil and the gearcase head? I see that the washer looks like steel on one side and a copperish metal on the other. I would imagine that the copperish metal would be the bearing surface and should go against the coil, but the washer was in there in the opposite direction. Did somebody have it in wrong? Also, the copperish side has two grooves in it and the parts manual shows that side going against the coil. However, it could just be their way of explicitly showing the details of the washer. Thanks.

Nevermind. It says in the manual that the bronze side goes into the gearcase. When I read that quickly, I took it to mean that the washer goes into the gearcase. Well, duh, of course it does. After taking a second look, I see that the bronze side goes toward the front of the skeg (into the gearcase) and provides a bearing surface for the hub assembly. The last guy definitely had it in there backwards.
