My shift cable from throttle lever at dash to the bracket on the engine has alot of play in it. So i'm going to replace it. It's an 1986 mercruiser setup

Are you referring to the cable that attaches to the carburator OR the cable that actually shifts the outdrive to foreward, reverse, neutral??? There are 2 cables

The cable that comes from the throttle lever at the dash to the shift bracket. I already replaced the shift cable. The cable that comes from the drive to the shift bracket. I'm replacing the long cable in my cause the 16 foot cable

How and where is the play in the cable? Are you sure it's the cable and not the shifter?

Re: proper way of adjusting shift cable from throttle lever to engine?

Hi, I'm having a little trouble with my 1993 Gen II aplha. Shifting into reverse sometimes 'skips' or ratchets. Of course at the worst times, but not always. I noticed (on land) when I've shifted into either forward or reverse the throttle will push/pull the shift plate a little more after the detent. Is this normal? Mine also has a shift assist (spring loaded rod), but I haven't found anything about this in my manual (seloc). Will the last post work correctly for mine?

I'm not sure of the make of my throttle/shifter, but are they adjustable?

You need to start a new thread of your own.
