I just finished rebuilding three gunked carbs on a 75 HP ELPTO with the help of this forum and the service manual. Getting ready to put things back I see two sets of torque values for the air attenuator bolts/studs-nuts. In section 1 (Specs) they are called out at 100 in-lbs; in the power head section they are called out at 45 FT-lbs. That is quite a difference.

I put the carbs & air attenuator back and started torquing the nuts/bolts and noticed (using a steel ruler) a deflection across the air attenuator at 10 FT-lbs (120 in lbs). I stopped there not wanting to crack the attenuator or snap ears off the carbs.

45 FT-LBS seems very high given the reed block and cylinder heads are spec'd at 18 ft-lbs

any advice is very welcome

Since you quoted the manual, I won't dig into mine. I'd take the 100 in-lbs in a heartbeat due to the nature of the beast with big gaskets and all. You put the carb together with a screwdriver and install it with a 5" open end wrench. 45 ft-lbs has to be for a half inch bolt or better, metal to metal and unless you are Tarzan you need to be on the end of a 12 inch or better wrench. I can look up torque vs screw size if necessary.

Mark,
thanks for the confirmation. I thought 45 ft-lbs was extreme too.
The studs/bolts are approx 5/16 (maybe 3/8)
so I'll go with the 100 in-lbs
again thanks
