Hey guys....just purchased a 2003 Seaswirl with a 5.O GL....I'm curious to see what a proper range is for the temp...was running @ 180 degrees during the first few hours of op.....mainly kept the speed at 30, with the rpm range @ 2800....do these typically run at a higher temp when new, then level off? It didn't rise above 180, but obviously, I didn't run it very hard either....

OMC's are made to run around 155-170 degree's

With that being said , did the engine Get any hotter that 180 or did it just warm up to 180 and stay there?

180 sounds a little warm. Just talked to a friend with a 5.0L volvo and he said his never goes above 160, and it usually runs cooler than that. I'd imagine it's cooler in Canada than it is here in Texas. We run out boats in 100+ temperatures pretty regularly in the summer. My 4.3L Volvo usually runs in the 140-150 range. That's my 2 cents worth....

you can check the actual temp with an infrared type thermometer from sears to confirm proper operation of the gauge. Also is it a closed cooling system or raw water cooled engine.

I have OMC 5.7, my book stats 180 degrees for the 350 .. I believe that is typical for OMC.

Thanks for the input,guys....another question for you seasoned vets out there....my boat has a power tilt button on the throttle, and the manuals seem to have conflicting information on the proper usage....is the middle range the best position for the outdrive to be in during river cruising? Should you be adjusting the trim while operating the boat, and if so, at what rpm's,etc (safe range)...one part of the manual indicated not to raise or lower the drive with the engine running, another part said to adjust at any time during your time on the water...

What they are telling you is to NOT exceed the range of the trim with the engine running. You should have a trim guage.

Do not attempt to gpo beyond the upper limits of trim while running.

Beyond the trim range is tilt. That is to be used for beaching, trailering, etc.

I see what you're saying...the gauge has the upper 3/4 range as the tilt area...what is the best technique for beaching? I was practising this on Sunday, cutting the engine @ 10 feet out, then raising the trim as I glided in...the particular beach that I was on has an extreme drop 3 feet into the water..
