I can't seem to find any info on how far the shift bellows needs to be pushed onto the cable. Does it butt up tight to the bell housing and cover the exposed metal crimp on the sheathing? Been a couple years since it was removed.

Manual 14 pg 4B-66 says to crimp shift bellows (zip tie is fine too) -

it gives a spec for clamp to be 2.5" off the bellhousing.
