Last year, on what was to be my last fishing trip of the year, I was doing my pre-trip inspection before leaving at 3 a.m. Well the trolling motor was dead, so I thought the battery was shot. I just put the boat in storage for the year. I have 2 wet deep cycle battery's. Today, I went ahead and pulled them out to test/charge them because I thought there might have been an issue with my on board charger. They both had roughly 12.5 volt's. That mean's they're still good,,,right?? I'm going to try and take them and get them load tested.

My charger is a Cabela's dual bank. I have to admit I know nothing about electronic's. I tested the charger. The side labled "start battery" was putting out 12.12 volt's, and the other side was putting out 13.5. Is this normal for them to be differant. When I tested the amps, both side's were going up and down from 1 through 5. Is that normal.

When I charge the battery, should I remove the cap's, or leave them on. I looked in there and all the water level's where equal, and no plate's were showing. I guess I don't need to add water, or do I.

Sorry to sound like such a newbie, but hey, I am. :D

Batteries are vented. Leave the caps on. Because a battery measures 12.5 volts doesn't mean a thing. It does mean it has 12.5 volts available but it may have no current capacity. A load test can be done at any auto parts store.

The batteries should have about 12.6 volts. The chargers need to put out more. 13.5 sounds about right, 12.12 is wrong.

To test the batteries you need to have them load tested. Any half decent auto parts place should be able to do a load test.

Leave the caps on.

Yup. The charger output needs to be up that as Jack L said, for both channels.

When you take a cap off and look inside of the battery, there is a fill tube with battery soup below. When you add water, you fill with distilled water ONLY. Somewhere near the bottom of the fill tube is ring/lip/ledge molded into the plastic. That is the fill level. There will be one of two slits up the sides of the tube for gasses to move thru. Do not over fill when adding distilled water.

I use a plastic turkey baster to fill batteries with. Cheap, get it anywhere kitchen utensils are sold.
