Hello, I got a problem. I have an Evinrude Fisherman 5.5 HP from 1962. And
When i put it in reverse, i give it some gas and it gets nowhere. it does go bacwards a little bit, but not much. The motor makes a lot of sound, and reaches very high RPM.

The propeller is not original. And im thinking thats the propblem. I have never tried this motor before, so i don't know what's normal.

What type of propeller does this motor need. is it better with 3 blades?

NB: this has two blades, and it does go forward jus if you wondered..

Thanks alot!

Jeff

Re: Propeller for Fisherman

What are you pushing with that motor, a sailboat or something? OK, here is the deal: Those motors, and most others, do not back up very well due to the fact that the prop is sucking exhaust when turning backwards. A few motors such as the 9.9 are offered with reverse thrust kits to help in that matter.

If you are moving a heavy load such as a big sailboat, the 3 blade will give more thrust, assuming the pitch is correct. The motor came with a 2 blade semi-weedless prop which is fine for the average fishin' boat.

EDIT: Also, if you are using it as a kicker on a bigger boat and it is a short shaft motor on a long shaft transom, putting the prop above the boat bottom, it will not back up very well because the prop wash is beating up against the transom. They tell me that is how they stop or back up jet planes but I don't know much about airplanes except the last one I rode on did everything but flip over on it's back when landing in a thunderstorm in Denver a few weeks ago.

Re: Propeller for Fisherman

There is no public listing that I know of for the motor parts manuals before 1968.

Michigan Wheel manufactured propellers are sold world wide, so I would look for a dealer for their three blade propeller, part number 012067.

I have the same problem with my 1965 6HP, which uses the same propellers. The MW 012067 is the only three blade that I have found that fits.
