Hi all, I need to remove & replace a 3 blade alum. prop, it is on a 1980 Mercruiser sterndrive. (This isn't a trick question, I really AM stupid...) Anyway I got the nut and star washer are off, then I thought it should just pull off the splined shaft. But there is another big collar or something there, between the prop and the washer. Do I need to pry it off with a separator? It didn't respond to more gentle persuasion. My marina manager is stumped but he noticed a very fine, straight, and almost radial split in the shaft which may be a crack...?. Any advice appreciated, can trade advice about guitars!

I think that ring is the hub and that the prop is just froxe on, do the wiggle wiggle and see if it comes off! the shaft if it is cracked that is your propblem...

Soak it good with a penetrating type oil and be patient getting it off. Light tapping with a hammer will help the oil penetrate. It may take several applications. Don't try to force it off. This reinforces the importance of pulling the propellor every year and coating splines with fresh marine grease.

Jeffery,Jack offers sound advice. If you attempt to pull off in one motion you stand a good chance of galling the splines. After soaking ,run nut back on to propshaft leaving the shaft about 1/8" recessed.Hold outward on prop while gently rapping on propshaft nut with leather or wooden mallet. If it moves a bit and stops reverse the direction by holding out on nut and tapping back in on prop.Repeat this procedure until prop frees itself or until you are out of bad words.<br /> Good luck :D
