I have a 1978 blue fin fish and ski (sportsman)
1980 3cylinder 70hp Evinrude
Current prop 14 x 17 but I dont know the manufacturer off the top of my head.
WOT rpm is around 5000 - 5200

I believe the rpm range is something like 5 - 6000, but I am not sure.

I have been looking at the Turning point 13 3/4 x 15 prop.

I am wondering that if I go with this prop will it improve the holeshot as tha is where we are having some difficulties. I chose this prop because I had saw that several people are using it and like how it performs.

My other question is how easy is it to switch back to a prop that doesn't use the "hub kit" that is required with the prop? I plan on keeping the 14x17 for cruising and in case of emergencies.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

The engine would benefit from the new prop. Getting the rpm up closer to the top of the RPM band will certainly help hole shot and skiiing. Switching back and forth between props is no problem. Use the hardware for the 17 when using it. Use the hardware for the 15 when using it.

I guess my other question would be 3 blade prop vs a 4 blade prop? I am really green when it comes to the mechanics of a boat so being that a prop isn't exactly cheap Iwould like to make the best investment I can right off the bat.

Thanks again.

4 blade prop will give you more "Hole-shot" to pull your skier out of the water due to more surface space. I've heard there is a rule of thumb for rpm change at WOT but I just watch the rpms and speed when pulling them anyways.......

I took the boat out today and it ran really well. I was able to get a good ready off the tiny tac and found that my 14 x 17 prop was putting me at 5160rpm, so definetely on the bottom end of the suggested RPM's so I went ahead and ordered the Hustler prop. A little less diameter and 2" less pitch. I am really interested to see how it will perform. Thanks for all the help. Now if I could only find the fish.

Re: Prop to be used with skiing etc.

I became a little confused when the prop arrived today. What is this vent hole system that the was advertised on the page,

http://boatpropellers.iboats.com/Ev...9957/?**********=856268989&*******=638625502?

I looked on Turning Points website and it stated that the vent holes are holes behind each blade, but when I look at the prop I receieved there is no holes anywhere around any of the blades. Please help me understand as I feel I am missing something.

The vent holes are in the hub. They allow a little of the exhaust to leak out in front of the blade and increase prop slip at low rpms for better hole shot.

I have both a 15 and 17 pitch Hustler, and only the 17 came vented from the factory. The 15 is not vented, but you can vent it yourself.
