Final Report , base is 143 votes:

Almost all are running a boat of planing design (93%), spread over the sizes ‘38% up to 17’, ‘36% 18 to 20’ and ‘24% 21-25’ with 3% in the category 25+.

The most popular motor sizes are 13% 81-100 hp, 11% 101-120 hp and 11% 121-140 hp, evenly followed by 15% in 41-80 hp and 15% in 141-180 hp. A combined group of ‘181 and up’ is relatively large but covers a pretty wide range of powerplants – presumably i/o.

12% have up to 70% of max. rated hp, 17% have 70-80% but the vast majority (50%) have motors of 80% or more. 89% say it runs within recommended rpm at WOT – a rather high 11% say ‘Don’t know’ which is a shame as this really tells how your motor works.

Almost 54% use a prop different from the standard; 16% don’t know. – 5 out of 10 still use aluminium. 3-blade design is by far most popular (90%) and although spread over a large number of brands, Michigan Match stand out as preferred after market brand.

Pitches are most 19” (20%) followed by 17” (17%) and 21” (12%). Those three types cover 49% of all. 9% said ‘Don’t know’.

84% claims to understand prop technology, 90% finds their prop performs ‘Great’ or ‘OK’. Nevertheless, 44% think their prop could perform better in one way or another.

When looking for a new prop 16% wants same performance as the old one, 10% wants better hole shot, 21% wants better top speed, 10% wants better grip and 42% want overall performance.

It would please manufacturers to learn, that no less than 34% are willing to pay any fair price for a prop, provided it is good value. The rest has a budget of either $0-200 (43%) or $200-400 (23%).

------------------

The statistically most common boat is of planing design, up to to 20’ with 81-140 hp, which is 80% or more of max. rated power. 89% runs within recommended rpm at WOT turning an aftermarket aluminium 3-blade 19” prop made by Michigan (Match).
90% are happy with their prop although not all of these understand prop technology. 44% think their prop could perform better in one way or another.

Full survey here
