Hello, this is my first post..... I just bought a 1958 5.5hp Evinrude in very nice condition, but I'm having a tought time getting the prop off. Is it possible that the shear pin hole in the shaft expanded and made a ridge so the prop won't come off ? Is there a safe way to remove this prop without damageing it....thanks

Sometime's if a soft brass pin, or an incorrect soft metal pin is used, it will shear off leaving a lip of metal over the end's of the broken pin leaving it stuck in the prop shaft. You may be able to drive the prop back, and forth, using a block of wood, and a hammer.

I'm sure anything is possible, but most likely the sheap pin may have broken and wedged itself in position, binding the pro with it as well. That or it's just rusted on.
I'd spray some penetrating lube all over the shaft and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. Come back with either a rubber mallet or hammer and a piece of wood and start gently tapping the prop in the off direction. If you need more force you can hit it harder, just try to use common sense about how hard not to hit it also. Worst care, may need a bearing puller or something. You can try heat as a last case also, but it might damage the hub where it's pressed into the prop.

Re: prop stuck

So, do you have the drive pin out? Can you move the prop on the shaft at all? If you can, your diagnosis is probably correct--the drive pin hole is burred a bit. If I am correct so far, put the shift in gear, and Disconnect And Ground The Spark Plug Leads!, and twist and pull on the prop till you get it off. Once off, use a file to clean up the burred hole.

If the prop is severely stuck on and you can't move it even a hair, it probably is rusted or corroded on. That is very unusual on that motor.

That motor uses a 3/16" stainless steel drive pin, not a brass "shear" pin. A slip clutch within the lower unit releases to protect the drive train if you clobber an obstruction. It does not have a rubber shock hub within the propeller. So don't worry about damaging that.

Re: prop stuck

The drive pin came out with no problem and the prop spins freely on the shaft, but has a tough time going past the drive pin hole.....i'll give it a try with a block of wood. I'm just trying to be careful so not to hurt the prop. thanks again
