I'm trying to remove the prop on an older Merc 9.8hp (Mercury 110) and it is frozen to the splined shaft. Any tips on getting it off without damage.

Re: Prop stuck

Once a prop is frozen on it is usually destroyed in removal. accepted practice is to burn it off the shaft.....a messsy an dangerous job.

Re: Prop stuck

I have tried it.
I used a lot of heavy tooling, but no luck.
I cut it in pieces with my powertool. and put a new prop on.
Be very careful not to damage the spilnes and grease well before installing new prop.
mikael

HD, before you get the torches and saws out have you tried soaking the shaft/hub with a penatrating type lube? Liquid Wrench or even WD-40 may loosen it if you let it soak for a few days. Wet it a couple times a day and let it sit. After that you'll need a puller with claws to grab the lower edge/hub of the prop. If that doesn't do it it may pull the prop right off the splined hub. This will save you from having to cut through the prop. You'll be left with just the prop hub on the shaft, which will be allot easier to cut off and you can have the prop rehubed at a prop shop. THIS MAY NOT WORK ON OUTBOARDS!!
In my line of work I have to remove frozen fastners all the time.. You can try soaking it in coke or pepsi. (the choice is yours) It is as week acid and will free most things.. I got a old piston out of a block that had been stuck in there 20 years.. The dealer smashed a hole in it trying to get it out.. Overnight in Pepsi and I pushed it out with a block of wook and a sharp tap from a 1 pound hammer. This may have other affects on you motor so try at you own risk but it may be better them smashing a nice prop.

Try Murphy's Mystery oil. I used it after Hurricane Floyd flooded a couple of my vechicles and it freed them up.
