I had a Mercruiser I/O and used Sierra 18-9200 ( a replacement for Mercruiser 92-816391A4) on my prop spline. I now have a 2000 Johnson 90 hp and the manual calls for OMC Triple Guard for the prop spline. Since I have about 90% of the Sierra grease left would it be ok to use that instead of buying the OMC Triple Guard?

Triple Guard is good stuff. But I don't know any good reason why the Sierra wouldn't be OK. If you run in salt water, you are supposed to pull & clean it & relube as part of your maintenance program anyway.

I think this a case of any grease is better than no grease, as Bondo says. I fresh water boat and use generic marine blue stuff from WallyWorld and no problems.

The OMC Triple Guard grease is blue. It's a true waterproof, heavy grease- made for low-temp service. (not wheel bearings) It is designed for greasing propshafts and the swivel brackets on outboards. Also, specifically for applications that are in the water, like propshafts. The Merc spline grease noted is for Mercruiser driveshafts and coupler greasing-both inside the boat applications. I'm not sure that it's labeled as a true waterproof grease.

The prop and splines on both MerCruisers and your Johnny OB are nearly identical. If it works for the MerCruiser, it will work for the Johnny.

I use boat trailer wheel bearing grease from Wallyworld for everything, (zercs, trailer wheel bearings prop and driveshafts and general greasing). I pull my prop every year and grease it, as I boat in saltwater.

I use the special lube 101 from MerCruiser for the steering rod. Not sure it is a lot better, but I have it....

After tons of searching I came across a site that lists the Sierra 18-9200 as useable on prop splines. Not one site mentioned whether it is waterproof or not. I boat in salt water and usually pull my prop twice a year to regrease the spline. Never had a problem with the Sierra on my I/O so I will use it on my outboard until I use it all up. Thanks for all the replies!
