This weekend I ran into some kelp at mid-speed and the prop slipped letting the engine over-rev.

I backed out slowly just fine, then started forward, after reaching about 7 mph the prop slipped again. I slowly limped around at 5 mph without a problem the rest of the day. The prop was clean and free of debris.

I read in a few Merc posts that there is a coupler or clutch that keeps the prop on. Can I check and replace this with the boat in the water? What should I be looking for?

I have an OMC around 1978 with a 302cid 190 HP Ford running on a 26' Reinell C26.

It sounds like the prop hub is spun. The prop would have to go to a recond shop and get rehubbed. $50 or so. charlie

Re: Prop slipping on '77 OMC

The boat is moored in the water at Dana Inn Marina in San Diego's Mission Bay. If I raise the outdrive all the way up the prop is still submerged.

I have the OMC Shop manual which shows forward and reverse hubs as part of the prop assembly. My current propeller looks really corroded, so I'll plan on replacing it.

Can I remove the prop with the boat in the water or do I need to find a place to haul the boat out to get the prop off and back on?

Re: Prop slipping on '77 OMC

I'm going to try removing the prop this weekend underwater (plan A) and if that doesn't work I'll pay the bucks to get the haul out and have somebody remove it torch-in-hand as Plan B.

What is a reasonable propeller size for a 26' boat with cabin around 7,000 lbs (loaded) with a 190 HP engine?

Using the Merc site as a comparison their prop selector leads me to think I might start looking at an 18" pitch.

I'm going to check with the prop techs here in town before I buy, but any real-world suggestions would be nice. Since the hub is spun and I never got a good WOT RPM test... any suggestions for similar boats by weight and engine is greatly appreciated.

Rino
